Questions about Alzheimer’s Disease

Dear Dr. Bond,

“My father has the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. What type of diet should he be eating?”

Lori from Dayton, TX

Incorporate a high-fiber diet by using fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, millet, brown rice, oat bran, whole grains, flaxseed and extra virgin olive oil.

Eat curry or Turmeric root capsules. Reduces the amyloid buildup in the brain. Amyloid is a substance that many believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s. Turmeric may reduce the risk by as much as 50%. Also, Fish oil is very beneficial as it too will reduce amyloid beta buildup in the brain.

Avoid all soy products, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, white sugar, processed foods, red meat.

Do not use aluminum cookware, only stainless steel or glass.

Dear Dr. Bond,

“What nutrients would be helpful for those wanting to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease?”

Robert from Cleveland, TX

Prevention is definitely the key. There is no cure for AD, so the next best thing is to prevention. I prefer to use Fish oil daily. As written above, fish oil reduces amyloid beta protein, a substance which tangles the nerve fibers in the brain. Taken daily, fish oil can reduce amyloid beta buildup, but also help improve cardiovascular function, and relieve joint pain. Turmeric root will also help reduce amyloid beta buildup as research studies suggest, we should all be getting this incredible spice in our diets daily!

Other nutrients to consider for reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s are Phosphatidylserine, Acetyl-l-carnitine, Lecithin and Huperzine A. These nutrients focus on improving the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, a nutrient/neurotransmitter which is needed to convert short-term memory into long-term memory. Remember (no pun intended), Alzheimer’s reduces the ability to remember the here and now. Alzheimer’s patients have no problem talking about the past as it’s stored in long-term memory.

Be blessed and be healthy!
