Eating Healthy Fats

For decades the American public has been trained to think all fats are bad, but that’s not true. We need fats to help our bodies stay healthy. Fat performs a variety of functions in our bodies, such as in assisting with mineral and vitamin absorption; bolstering our immune systems; and playing a part in hormone regulation.

The healthiest of fats are the Omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil.

Studies have shown that getting enough omega-3 can significantly impact our chances of developing deadly diseases. Recent research has indicated that the intake of sufficient levels of omega-3 may reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer.

When the body receives healthy fats, it helps to rid the body of bad fats or the effects of eating bad fats. Consuming Omega 3’s from fish oil will help to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol. This is so effective that many people HDL levels are higher than the LDL levels which have been unheard of in medical science. For those with high triglyceride levels, fish oil is the best remedy as it can lower these levels very quickly and effectively. Those with high triglyceride levels usually have a problem with high sugar intake. Diabetics are known to have higher than normal levels of triglycerides because of high blood sugar.

Eating healthy fats can also come from extra virgin coconut oil which is high in saturated fat, but does not contain those dreaded trans fatty acids. Coconut oil is best used for those who fry their food. It is much healthier than safflower, canola or olive oil. By the way, don’t fry with olive oil, it turns to a bad fat in high heat. Coconut oil is the best to use because it doesn’t harm the arteries and improves thyroid function. Many of my clients drop by my office to purchase our organic coconut oil to use in cooking.

When your doctor tells you to go on a low-fat diet, that means to avoid bad fats, but indulge in good fats. Stick with coconut oil and fish oil. Flaxseed oil is fine, but it doesn’t convert very well to help the brain. Fish oil is supreme for brain and arterial health and coconut oil is the choice for cooking. So there you have it, eat fat and live! Be blessed and be healthy!
